What is healthspan? While many people recognize the term lifespan as the total number of years we live, healthspan emphasizes the quality of years lived. It refers to the period of life spent in good health, free from serious illness, with a focus on enhancing and prolonging vitality and well-being.
The WVU Healthspan Nutrition Lab is dedicated to advancing scientific research and implementing evidence-based nutrition strategies to achieve this goal. Our mission is to reduce the prevalence of diet-related chronic conditions—such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders—by fostering sustainable dietary and lifestyle interventions.
We believe that improving food literacy is essential for empowering individuals to make informed, health-supportive dietary choices. Through research, community engagement, and education, we aim to enhance people's understanding of the long-term impact of dietary habits on overall health and well-being. By collaborating with healthcare professionals and community partners, we strive to develop innovative solutions that address nutritional challenges and improve public health outcomes in West Virginia.
