I mproving the health of West Virginians through intervention and data collection
As a study participant, you'll get to work with both a registered dietitian and a nutrition coach. Our registered dietitians are trained to know and understand the complexities of many health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity, and our nutrition coaches are trained in beha vior change support. Together, the team will help you:- Identify your goals for health improvement
- Uncover and troubleshoot the stumbling blocks
- Advance through a program that is designed to eliminate opportunities for failure

After enrolling in the study, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups that differ only by the number of visits you will have with the dietitian and nutrition coach. You will receive educational materials in both print and digital formats, regardless of the group you are assigned to.

Throughout the first 12 months of the study, you will participate in virtual meetings (via Zoom or telephone) with the dietitian and nutrition coach, with a follow-up visit six months after your final virtual meeting with your dietitian and coach.
- Dietitian sessions: You'll meet with a dietitian four times to learn how nutrition can impact your health and overall well-being. Sessions will last 30 to 60 minutes each. You'll have time to review and identify goals, concerns and specific needs. Together, you and the dietitian will create a practical plan for health improvement.
- Nutrition coach sessions: Depending on which group to which you're assigned, you'll have either four or 16 sessions with a nutrition coach. Each 15 to 20-minute session will allow for you and your coach to set and manage your goals. Your nutrition coach will also equip you with resources to help meet your goals. [Please note: group assignments are random; you cannot select your group.]

Over the 18 months, you'll meet with the research team five times for in-person assessments at your local physician’s office or the WVU Healthspan Nutrition Lab in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Each assessment will take about 60 minutes. Researchers will collect data, including: height, weight, body composition, blood pressure, lipids, and blood sugar (measured by fingerstick).

Prior to each in-person assessment--and one additional time during month nine of the intervention--you'll take two online surveys from home about demographics, health status, lifestyle, motivation, confidence, and nutrition knowledge.

You'll also need to complete a 4-day food and beverage intake record to bring to each of the five in-person data collection assessments.
